Channel 5 News Highlights Rising Suicide Risk Among Midlife Women

LJMU Researcher Calls for Urgent Action

Channel 5 News has interviewed Professor Pooja Saini of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) to discuss the increasing risk of suicide among women aged 45–49, an issue experts say remains poorly understood and under-researched.

During the segment, Professor Saini emphasized the urgent need for more services and research to help reduce suicide rates in midlife women. “The causes of suicide in women are complex and often overlooked,” she said, highlighting that alcohol use, previous self-harm, psychiatric diagnoses, and bereavement are established risk factors. She also pointed to emerging evidence suggesting an increased risk during perimenopause.

The programme also featured powerful first-hand accounts from Heather and Lainee, who both receive support from The Martin Gallier Project following their experiences of suicide attempts and bereavement.

Professor Saini shared recent findings from research led by Olivia Hendriks, which revealed that women prescribed a combination of hormones experienced a reduction in depression and psychological distress symptoms.

She credited Dr. Louise Newson for drawing attention to this critical issue and Jessica Gallier-Booth for ensuring women in suicidal crisis have access to support services. “Most importantly,” Saini added, “I want to thank Heather and Lainee for their courage in sharing their lived experiences to help others.”

The discussion underscores a growing call within the health community for targeted mental health interventions and greater awareness of the unique challenges faced by women in midlife. Source: Jamie McGovern / Channel 5
